In this guide, we look at the common faults and how much it will cost to repair a car suspension system.
What does a car suspension do?
The suspension system is designed to maintain the stability and smooth driveability of the vehicle by maximising tyre contact with the road surface whilst driving in variable road conditions, as well as absorbing shocks, bumps, and uneven surfaces, such as potholes, adverse cambers etc.
All suspension systems consist of components like springs, shock absorbers, control arms and linkages that work together to maintain a smooth and steady ride.
The suspension system also plays a crucial role in tyre safety. It helps to keep the wheels and tyres properly aligned, preventing uneven wear problems and ensure steering stability.
Here is what a car suspension system looks like:
This can vary, depending on the make, model, age, and type of vehicle that is being driven. If you are unsure on what you can do to repair a suspension system, take the vehicle to a trusted local garage.

Car suspension problems
If you suspect your vehicle has a suspension related problem, take the vehicle to a local garage.
Here are some common suspension issues to watch out for:
Shock absorbers
There are normally four shock absorbers fitted to a vehicle – one at each corner – their primary role is to ensure the vehicle’s tyres remain in contact with the road at all times, as well as to absorb the shock, or impact from sudden dips or unevenness in the road surface.
If you can feel the car bouncing excessively, especially when going over bumps or potholes, then there is likely an issue with one or more, of the shock absorbers.
If they become weak, through wear or damage, they can’t properly dampen the bounce from the road and will affect the vehicle’s driving stability. You may also see signs of fluid seepage, which will gradually reduce the effectiveness of the shock absorber.
Shock absorbers are typically replaced in pairs (front or rear).
Weak or broken road springs
The road springs – typically one above each wheel – support the weight of the vehicle, help maintain the ride height and help deliver a smooth ride. Over time, they can weaken or break.
A typical indicator of a weak or broken spring is that the car might sag on one side or one corner. This may be noticed before getting in the vehicle in some cases. More commonly, you might hear clunking or rattling noises when driving over bumps – a typical indicator of a broken spring.
You may also notice abnormal tyre wear and a reduced handling and / or drive quality.
Like shock absorbers, road springs are typically replaced in pairs (front or rear).
Other suspension components – control arms and linkages
Control arms connect the wheels and hubs to the rest of the suspension system and bushings help reduce friction where they connect. Worn bushings or damaged control arms can cause instability.
Misaligned wheels or uneven tyre wear
This is commonly seen when the car pulls to one side. Uneven tyre wear is one of the most obvious signs there is an issue with the suspension system.
Steering issues
Finally, if you notice that the steering feels vague, or odd to handle, then there could be a problem with the suspension and will need investigating urgently.
If you notice any of the above issues, get your vehicle checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.
By not immediately addressing issues with the suspension system, it can lead to poor handling and an increased safety risks for the driver and other road users.
Car suspension repair cost
Although the final price can vary due to a range of factors, including make, model, age, and type of vehicle, drivers in the UK can expect to pay anywhere between £100 and £600. It can also vary depending on location.
This includes parts and labour to repair the suspension.
According to whocanfixmycar, the average cost to repair a suspension system is around £135.
