With over 8.4 million Brits buying an iPhone in 2023, the American tech giant has a large customer base – and for those with compliant vehicles, many can take advantage of the various great features provided by CarPlay.

What is Apple CarPlay?

Apple CarPlay is a technology that allows drivers to connect their iPhones to their car's infotainment system.

The aim is to provide a safer and more seamless way to use a device when driving.

It works by connecting the device to the car through a USB cable or over Bluetooth.

Once connected, the infotainment display mirrors the drivers iPhone screen.

However, it is a simplified version that is easier to use when behind the wheel.

How does Apple CarPlay work?

For the latest editions of the iPhone, you will not need to download anything from the App Store.

Apple CarPlay not working – what can you do?

Before you panic, the most common cause for your device not connecting to the vehicle’s Apple CarPlay is due to your settings.

You’ll need to go to your settings, then screen time, and then to content and privacy restrictions.

If the restrictions are turned on, click on allowed apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

However, if this still doesn’t fix the issue, then here are a few common problems and how to resolve them.

Restart your phone

Simply restart your device by switching it on and off. This often fixes many minor technical issues with mobile phones.

Remember to close all your apps beforehand to help with the reset.

Is CarPlay enabled?

If you have followed all the steps but your CarPlay still won’t work, then you may need to check your settings.

Go to general, and then select CarPlay. There will a ‘My Cars’ option where you can reconfigure the connection.

Is your Bluetooth connected?

For drivers wishing to not use CarPlay, go to settings, then general, and select CarPlay.

From here you can disconnect from a chosen vehicle by selecting ‘forget this car’.
