Government issues urgent message to avoid third parties when renewing your driving licence
The Government has issued a stark reminder to drivers looking to renew their driving licence, to avoid third party websites that could charge a premium for the service.

Renewing licences is only done through the official GOV.UK website, and with potentially millions of drivers being at risk of falling for scammers, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) released the following statement on their social media.

They stated: “Due to renew your driving licence? Only use GOV.UK and avoid third-party websites which charge a premium.”

In fact, the Government agency revealed that back in 2021, there was a reported 803 drivers over the age of 70 had renewed through a third party.

Drivers over the age of 70 must renew their licences every three years.

Often these websites charged a premium for the service – and the Government has reminded those in the age bracket to be aware of the risks.

In the report from the DVLA that highlighted the issue of third party scammers targeting older drivers, some drivers were forced to pay an £81 handling fee – for a service that should be free of charge.

Third-party websites often charge drivers and then just simply pass an application over to the DVLA to process.

Although some websites may seem legitimate and promise a quicker result, they are fraudulent claims and should be ignored.

Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive said: “Drivers looking to renew their licence at 70 and over should use our online service which is secure, free of charge, and also the quickest and easiest way to transact with DVLA. Customers usually receive their driving licence in just five days. Always remember to always use GOV.UK when using any of DVLA’s many online services.”
